PRESIDENT Bola Tinubu yesterday hosted the governors of the States that border the Niger Republic.
According to reports, the meeting at State House in Abuja was a part of the President’s deliberations on the situation in Niger.
The governors present include: Ahmed Aliyu (Sokoto), Umar Namadi (Jigawa), Mai Malam Buni (Yobe), Idris Nasir (Kebbi), and Dr. Dikko Radda (Katsina)
The Northern Elites spoke out against the proposed assault on the military junta, stressing on the likely impact such action would have on Nigeria.
Tinubu who doubles as Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States had issued a seven-day ultimatum to the military junta in Niger Republic to restore democracy by returning power to Mohammed Bazoum.
This resulted in a series of sanctions, some of which led to the closing of the borders with Niger and the permanent suspension of aviation operations.
The president has also requested permission in writing from the National Assembly’s top officials to send military soldiers to the unstable Niger.
The Senate, however, declined the proposal and urged Tinubu and other regional leaders to exercise prudence when handling the political crisis.
