Onana recalled to Cameroon squad after World Cup row with Song

MANCHESTER United goalkeeper Andre Onana has been included in Cameroon’s squad for their final 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Burundi.

Onana has not featured for the Indomitable Lions since the Qatar 2022 World Cup last December, when he was sent home in the middle of the tournament after falling out with head coach Rigobert Song.

The 27-year-old reportedly ignored Song’s tactical instructions and the former Cameroon captain kicked him out of the team with their final group match still to be played.

Onana joined United from Inter Milan in July, replacing David De Gea as the first choice goalkeeper at Old Trafford following the Spaniard’s departure after 12 years at the club.

The former Ajax star announced his international retirement after his suspension was imposed for ‘disciplinary reasons’ but he is now back in the fold.

He could be back in goal for the Indomitable Lions against Burundi in a winner-takes-all Group C qualifier on September 12, ahead of the AFCON to be hosted by Cote d’Ivoire in January and February next year.

Onana, who helped Inter Milan to the UEFA Champions League final last season before leaving for Manchester United, has made 34 appearances for his country.
