Roma complete loan signing of Lukaku from Chelsea

ROMA have signed Romelu Lukaku on loan from Chelsea after he fell out of favour at the English Premier League club.

The Belgium striker is reunited with Jose Mourinho, who managed him at both Chelsea and Manchester United, and will spend the season in the Italian capital.

“AS Roma is delighted to confirm the loan signing of Belgian forward Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea,” the Serie A club announced on their official website today.

“Lukaku, 30, has joined the Giallorossi on a temporary basis until 30 June 2024.”

Lukaku was strongly linked with a permanent move to his former club Inter Milan where he spent last season on loan, but the deal fell through after it was discovered that he had held secret meetings with Juventus, who also ended up not buying him.

Having commanded huge fees to join United (£75m), Inter Milan (£70m) and to return to Chelsea in 2021 (£100m), Lukaku is going out on loan for the second season in a row.

“The welcome I’ve received from this club and its fans has excited me and given me even more motivation to give my all for my new team,” he said.

“As an opponent, I felt the atmosphere of the Stadio Olimpico, and felt the warmth of the Romanisti.

“It’s nice to know I’m a part of it today. I recently got the opportunity to speak with the owners, and I was impressed by their ambition. Now we must work, be humble, and grow game by game. For my part, I can’t wait to be available to my teammates both on and off the pitch.”

Lukaku has scored 280 goals and provided 93 assists in 589 games as a professional footballer.

He has won the Belgian championship with Anderlecht, the FA Cup and the Club World Cup with Chelsea, and also the Scudetto, Italian Cup, and Italian Super Cup with Inter.

“Knowing that Lukaku has chosen Roma can only bring us great satisfaction. With his arrival, we gain more experience, professionalism, and a drive to win,” Tiago Pinto, Roma’s General Manager, Football, said.

“All our decisions are focused on increasing the squad’s competitiveness, and we continually assess their performances on the pitch. However, it makes us very proud to watch the fans greet Romelu with such excitement.”

Lukaku will wear the No.90 shirt at Roma, who will pay around €5.8m in loan fees to Chelsea.
