Taiwo Awoniyi up for EPL player of the month award

TAIWO Awoniyi has been nominated for the English Premier League Player of the Month for August along with five other stars.

The Nigeria international heads a shortlist that also includes Manchester City’s Rodri, Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo, Tottenham Hotspur’s James Maddison, West Ham’s Jarrod Brown and Brighton’s Kaoru Mitoma.

Awoniyi, who is currently in Uyo preparing for the Super Eagles’ Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sao Tome and Principe, scored in each of Nottingham Forest’s first three matches this season, all in August.

The run extended his overall scoring streak dating back to last season to seven consecutive Premier League matches, only the third African player to achieve the feat.

Cameroon forward Mbeumo also scored three goals in three matches as Brentford stayed unbeaten, while Bowen netted twice and provided one assist for the in-form Hammers.

On his part, Maddison has stood out for Spurs since joining from relegated Leicester City, registering one goal and two assists in their fine start to the campaign.

Japan winger Mitoma began the season the way he ended last term, making two assists for the Seagulls and scoring a sensational solo goal against Wolverhampton Wanderers. Only two players surpassed his 11 chances created in the month.

Spain midfielder Rodri is the only nominee with a 100 per cent winning record in August, and he has already matched his goal tally from the whole of last season, with one of his goals being a late winner at Sheffield United. His 361 passes were more than any other player in August.

To decide the winner, who will be announced next week, the public votes will be combined with those of a panel of football experts.
