CARLOS Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev progressed to the semi-finals of the US Open overnight in their quest for the men’s singles title.
Holder Alcaraz will take on Medvedev in a semi-final featuring the last two champions after the world No.1 defeated an exhausted Alexander Zverev 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 in the early hours of today.
Zverev went into the quarter-final clash on the back of the longest match of the tournament on Monday – a near five-hour, five-set marathon in difficult conditions against Jannik Sinner.
The 12th seed was unable to keep up with the energetic 20-year-old Alcaraz as the Wimbledon champion secured a straightforward victory.
On his part, Medvedev reached the semi-finals by beating Andrey Rublev in hot and humid conditions that he said would cause a player to ‘die’.
The third seed appeared to struggle with his breathing but beat his fellow Russian and childhood friend 6-4, 6-3, 6-4.
“One player is going to die and you are going to see,” he said into a camera during the match in New York.
Both men’s semi-finals will take place at Flushing Meadows tomorrow.
Serb second seed Novak Djokovic, bidding for a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title, will face young American Ben Shelton in the first semi-final.
