THE National and State House of Assembly Election Petition Tribunal has dismissed Idris Dankawu of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) for falsifying his West African School Certificate (WAEC), which he presented for him to be elected into the Kumbotso Federal House of Representatives Constituency of Kano State.
Dankawu’s opponent, Munir Babba Danagudi of the All Progressives Congress (APC), had filed a petition alleging that Dankawu used a fake secondary school diploma to get accepted to Kaduna’s Nuhu Bamalli Polytechnic.
Justice I.P. Chima issued a decision in response to the petition that rocked the political landscape. He ruled that because “Idris Dankawu of NNPP has forged his WAEC certificate,” the election was invalid.
The tribunal following it’s decision gave INEC the order to withdraw the Certificate of Return that had previously been given to Dankawu and declared Danagudi as the winner of the February 25, 2023, Kumbotso Federal Constituency election.
Justice Chima emphasised the tribunal’s adherence to the law saying “Having satisfied the provision of the law, we hereby declare and return Munir Babba Danagudi as the winner of the Kumbotso Federal House of Representatives Election.”
The ruling concluded with a call for the parties to bear their own costs.
