NIGERIA’S representatives in the CAF Confederation Cup, Bendel Insurance, were held to a 2-2 draw at home by Morocco’s RS Berkane in the first leg of their second qualifying round tie tonight.
The Benin Arsenal led twice at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City but were prevented from taking a lead to the second leg in Morocco by the 2020 and 2022 winners of the continental competition.
Bendel Insurance went in front in the 28th minute through Imade Osarenkhoe as they sought to eliminate another North African club after their first round victory over Algeria’s ASO Chlef.
The experienced campaigners from Morocco were back level within 10 minutes though, with Hamza El Moussaoui netting the equaliser.
Federation Cup holders Insurance regained the lead 20 minutes into the second half through Vincent Augustus but the stubborn RS Berkane refused to fold.
The visitors equalised for the second time with seven minutes left as Mohamed El Morabit struck to put them in a strong position ahead of the second leg in Morocco in two weeks’ time.
If Bendel Insurance survive the expected onslaught in Morocco and advance, they would progress through to the Confederation Cup group stages.
