LAGOS: Explosion of transformer stirred fire at substation -TCN

THE Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has stated that a sudden explosion of a capacitor voltage transformer sparked a fire on the Maryland-Ikorodu 132/33kV transmission line 2 on Saturday.

The TCN said in a statement issued yesterday by its spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah, that the incident forced the emergency opening of the substation at approximately 7:58 p.m., which resulted in the isolation of Maryland-Ilupeju 132kV line 1, which was the source of power supply to the substation.

Mbah stated that efforts were made to extinguish the fire, but due to the presence of oil-soaked equipment in the vicinity of the explosion, it was difficult until the Lagos State Fire Service arrived at 8:45pm and finally extinguished the fire at 8:55pm.

The substation was restarted around 9:02 p.m. the same day.

The TCN stated in its communiqué that the sudden failure of the Maryland-Ikorodu 132kV Line 2 Yellow phase capacitor voltage transformer was caused by ageing and insulation failure.

The transmission company expressed regret for the inconveniences the incident caused electricity consumers receiving power from the Maryland Transmission Substation adding that it is diligently pursuing the reconductoring/rehabilitation of all its 132kV transmission lines and switchgears nationwide, which would greatly reduce such incidents.
