Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso ‘satisfied’ with Boniface’s progress after injury

BAYER Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso has expressed satisfaction with Victor Boniface’s pace of recovery from injury.

Super Eagles of Nigeria striker Boniface suffered a long-term injury in January just before the AFCON 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and he was ruled out of the tournament.

The 23-year-old then underwent surgery on his adductor in January and was given a return date of April. The Sporting Director for Bayer Leverkusen Simon Rolfes said two days ago that Boniface was on schedule to return from injury.

Alonso, who has guided Bayer Leverkusen to the top of the Bundesliga and kept them unbeaten in all competitions, has now also spoken positively about Boniface’s recovery process.

“Boniface has worked very hard, his rehab is going well,” the former Real Madrid, Liverpool and Bayern Munich midfielder told the Bayer Leverkusen website.

“Both he and also Arthur are working ambitiously and very professionally for their comebacks. We’re very satisfied with their progress.”

Boniface was having a sensational debut campaign in Germany before his injury, registering 16 goals and eight assists in 23 appearances across all competitions since his €20 million move from Belgian club Union St Gilloise in July.
