SUPER Falcons head coach Randy Waldrum has appealed to the Nigeria Football Federation and the sports ministry to help the team prepare adequately for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
The nine-time African champions secured their ticket to the Games last night after holding South Africa’s Banyana Banyana to a 0-0 draw in Pretoria, qualifying 1-0 on aggregate having won the first leg 1-0 in Abuja last Friday.
“My plea and challenge is to the ministry of sports and the NFF to help us prepare (for the Olympic Games) properly. We need to camp in Europe,” Waldrum said during his post-match press conference last night.
“We need proper training and transportation. We need to do things right because these women deserve the opportunity to represent our country, Nigeria, in the best possible way.
“At the Olympics, every team is a top team, and when you look at our group, it is the group of death.”
The Super Falcons are indeed in the ‘group of death’ at the Paris Olympics women’s football event, where they face current world champions Spain, 2011 world champions Japan and global giants Brazil.
Meanwhile, sports minister John Enoh has commended the Super Falcons for qualifying for the Olympics for the first since Beijing in 2008.
“The jinx is broken. The Super Falcons of Nigeria have emerged victorious against Banyana Banyana of South Africa with an aggregate score of 1-0 in the final leg of the Olympic qualifying match held in Pretoria,” Enoh wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter today.
“The Falcons kept a clean sheet and secured a historic victory after a sixteen-year drought. With this win, they have earned a spot in the Paris Olympics 2024.
“Congratulations to the Super Falcons on their incredible achievement.”
