NPFL: 3SC pip leaders Rangers as Remo Stars close gap, Enyimba slip up

ENUGU Rangers’ march to the Nigeria Premier Football League title was slowed down today in Ibadan as Shooting Stars Sports Club defeated the league leaders 1-0, while Remo Stars took full advantage to close in.

Enyimba, who were in second place at the start of the day, fell to third place after failing to beat Bayelsa United at home in Aba.

Christian Pyagbara struck in the 13th minute to earn 3SC all three points and take the Oluyole Warriors to within just one point of Enyimba.

Rangers remain on top, but their five-point advantage was cut down to two after Remo Stars defeated Heartland 4-1 in Ikenne.

Stanley Joseph bagged a brace to give Remo Stars the victory as they rose to second, two points behind leaders Rangers with two rounds of fixtures to end the campaign.

Enyimba, who got punished for the role in the show of shame in Enugu against Rangers on Sunday, slipped further from title contention with a 1-1 draw at home to struggling Bayelsa United.

The champions took the lead at the Enyimba Stadium through Alade Balogun in the 20th minute but Ekeson Okorie levelled up for the visitors 10 minutes before the break, leaving Enyimba four points adrift of Rangers.

The point for Bayelsa United took them just clear of the relegation zone, with Sporting Lagos replacing them in 17th place after a 2-1 defeat at home to Plateau United.

Akwa United pulled further away from the drop zone with a 3-1 victory over Katsina United, while Niger Tornadoes and Kwara United secured victories over Lobi Stars and Kano Pillars respectively.

Gombe United 1-3 Abia Warriors
Bendel Insurance 2-1 Rivers United
Enyimba 1-1 Bayelsa United
Akwa United 3-1 Katsina United
Remo Stars 4-1 Heartland
Tornadoes 3-2 Lobi Stars
Kwara United 2-0 Kano Pillars
Sporting Lagos 1-2 Plateau United
3SC 1-0 Rangers
