Euro 2024: France, Netherlands share points as Poland crash out, Ukraine edge Slovakia

FRANCE and the Netherlands played the first 0-0 draw of the Euro 2024 European Championship tonight, a result that confirmed Poland as the first team to be eliminated.

Despite a slew of presentable opportunities for both sides in the entertaining clash in Leipzig, Germany, France and the Netherlands could not find the breakthrough that would have taken them through to the round of 16 with a game to spare.

The best chance of the match fell to France — who had Kylian Mbappe on the bench — in the first half when Adrien Rabiot was through on goal, but instead of the Juventus midfielder to aim for goal, he made a hash of a pass to Antoine Griezmann and the opportunity was gone.

The Netherlands then thought they had taken the lead in the second half when Xavi Simons slotted home from close range but the goal was ruled out for offside as Denzel Dumfries was impeding France goalkeeper Mike Maignon.

The draw means the Netherlands and France share top spot in Group D with four points each, while Austria are third.

Poland are guaranteed to finish bottom of the group after their second defeat in the tournament, a 3-1 reverse against Austria earlier today.

Gernot Trauner, Christoph Baumgartner and Marko Arnautovic all struck for Ralf Rangnick’s side as they bounced back impressively from the defeat to France in their opening match.

In Group E, Ukraine recovered from an early setback to beat Slovakia 2-1 in Dusseldorf to earn their first win in Germany.

Ivan Schranz shot Slovakia ahead in the 17th minute but second half strikes from Mykola Shaparenko and substitute Roman Yaremchuk turned the match around for Sergei Rebrov’s side.
