THE Super Falcons are a better team than they were at the 2023 Women’s World Cup, the team’s head coach Randy Waldrum has claimed as they get set to begin their Paris 2024 Olympics campaign, where Asista Oshoala is eyeing a first-ever medal.
The nine-time African champions were impressive in Australia last year, reaching the round of 16 where they lost on penalties to eventual finalists England.
Waldrum’s side were unbeaten in open play at the World Cup despite facing co-hosts Australia, Olympic champions Canada and Ireland in the group phase and European champions England in the knockout rounds.
“I like what I have been seeing. We had a good time in Spain and since we arrived in France, it’s been fantastic and wonderful,” Waldrum said as he previewed his side’s opening match against Brazil billed for this evening in Bordeaux.
“The players are ready to go. We are in better condition than we were a year ago.
“The team have continued to improve since the World Cup. Hopefully, we will see that when we face Brazil, a very good side.”
When Nigeria last met Brazil in the Olympics women’s football event in 2008,
the Super Falcons were beaten 3-1 in a group clash.
Meanwhile, African Women’s Player of the Year Oshoala is confident the Super Falcons can reach uncharted territory with a medal in France.
“I have a lot of confidence in this team. We have many young players and we can make things difficult for our opponents,” the Bay FC striker told fifa.com.
“We don’t just think about getting out of the group, I think we can actually walk away with a medal.”
