TEAM Nigeria will be hoping for its first Paris 2024 Olympics medal tomorrow as Blessing Oborududu fights in the women’s wrestling third-place bout following her defeat in the semi-finals tonight.
Oborududu qualified for the women’s wrestling 68kg semi-final with a 6-2 points victory over France’s Koumba Larroque, who was loudly cheered on by the home fans during the in the quarterfinal bout.
In the semi-final, the multiple-times African and Commonwealth Games champion lost to Kyrgyzstan’s Meerim Zhumanazarova 3-1 on points.
Oborududu suffered a clash of heads early in the contest and she was obviously affected by the impact as she failed to reach a second consecutive Olympics final.
Oborududu, 35, was the first Nigerian to ever win an Olympic medal in wrestling with her silver at the delayed Tokyo 2020 Games three years ago.
To reach the Paris Olympics quarter-finals, Oborududu produced a dominant performance in her first match of today, overcoming Canada’s Linda Morais 8-2 in a repeat of the 2022 Commonwealth Games final.
