MANCHESTER City came from behind in regulation time and in the penalty shootout to beat Manchester United in their Community Shield clash at Wembley today.
The English Premier League champions won the shootout 7-6 over the FA Cup holders after a late goal in regulation time forced a 1-1 draw.
After a an entertaining but goalless first half, it was Manchester United who drew first blood with the game heading to a 0-0 draw.
Alejandro Garnacho, who replaced the impressive Amad Diallo just before the hour mark, skipped past two City markers to fire home left-footed in the 82nd minute.
The lead did not last long though as City pulled level through another substitute Bernardo Silva, who headed home at the far post off a cross from the brilliant Oscar Bobb in the 89th minute.
The match went straight to a penalty shootout at the end of the 90 minutes and United led again before City turned it around.
After Bruno Fernandes converted United’s first kick, Silva saw his saved by Andre Onana.
But Jadon Sancho missed for United to even the scores and Johnny Evans skied his effort, leaving Manuel Akanji to secure the victory for City.
This is Manchester City’s first win in the Community Shield since 2019, having lost it in 2021, 2022 and 2023.
The team that won the Community Shield went on to win that season’s Premier League title in just one of the last 13 campaigns (City in 2018/2019), according to Opta statistics.
