Lookman scores twice as Atalanta end Serie A leaders Napoli’s unbeaten run

SUPER EAGLES forward Ademola Lookman emerged as Atalanta’s hero today as they outclassed Serie A leaders Napoli 3-0 at the Stadio Diego Maradona.

Lookman netted twice in the first half and substitute Mateo Retegui scored Atalanta’s third in stoppage time to end Antonio Conte’s side’s nine-game unbeaten streak.

Starting as the centre forward in Gian Piero Gasperini’s 3-4-3 formation, Lookman gave visiting Atalanta the lead in the 10th minute off a Charles De Ketelaere assist.

The two combined again for Atalanta’s second 21 minutes later, the Belgian taking on three Napoli markers before releasing the Nigeria international, who struck from outside the box past Alex Meret in the Napoli goal.

Lookman was taken off in the 76th minute, but the scoring did not end with his exit as Italy striker Retegui completed the emphatic win in added time against Victor Osimhen’s club.

African Player of the Year contender Lookman, who finished 14th in the Ballon d’Or on Monday, has now registered six goals and four assists in eight Serie A appearances this season.

Lookman’s contributions have taken Atalanta to second in the Serie A table, three points behind Napoli.
