PRESIDENT Bola Tinubu has extended his congratulations to Senator Monday Okpebholo on his inauguration as the governor of Edo State.
Okpebholo assumed office today, succeeding former governor Godwin Obaseki in a ceremony attended by dignitaries, including Vice President Kashim Shettima.
In a statement by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu encouraged Governor Okpebholo to work diligently to improve the living standards of Edo State’s residents and to make a meaningful impact during his administration.
The President expressed happiness that Edo has now joined the states governed by the All Progressives Congress (APC). He urged the new governor to validate “the trust placed in him and the APC by promoting genuine democracy and effective governance in the state.”
Tinubu encouraged Okpebholo to strengthen the Legislature and other key government institutions, highlighting the importance of a strong and independent legislative branch in achieving good democratic governance.
Reflecting on the previous administration, Tinubu “regretted its attempts to weaken the legislative branch, impacting its effectiveness for much of its term.”
He also commended the Independent National Electoral Commission for the successful conduct of the Edo Governorship Election and encouraged the Commission to aim for even higher standards in the upcoming Ondo Governorship Election on November 16, 2024.
President Tinubu celebrated this as a new chapter in Edo State’s democratic journey and shared in the joy of Edo’s people for this significant occasion.
