Reaching the age of 60 is a remarkable milestone. It is one that calls for reflection, gratitude, and celebration. For Olayinka Olalekan Akande, this is more than just a birthday; it is a testament to a life shaped by hard work, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
Having known Akande for over four decades as a Rotaractor in the 1980s and later as a Rotarian, I am honoured to celebrate an outstanding gentleman today. A worthy aburo and a dear friend, Olayinka Akande embodies deep conviction, unshakable integrity, and a relentless pursuit of justice. His personal and professional journey reflects a rare blend of intellect, leadership, and service to both industry and humanity.
Akande’s career spans nearly 40 years across the public and private sectors, leaving an indelible mark. His academic achievements are equally impressive, with degrees in the Humanities and Law, a master’s in Industrial Relations, and postgraduate studies in Marketing and General Management. This multidisciplinary foundation has enabled him to navigate key sectors with remarkable foresight and strategic influence.
Currently serving as Managing Director of one of Africa’s most industrialized special economic zones, Akande has played a pivotal role in advancing industrial development. His career trajectory includes serving as Director-General of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) and holding executive roles in some of Nigeria’s biggest corporations, including UAC of Nigeria Plc, Unilever Nigeria Plc, GlaxoSmithKline Plc, and Coca-Cola Nigeria Limited. He also made significant contributions to the telecommunications industry through key roles at Glomobile and Etisalat/9mobile.
Beyond his corporate achievements, Akande remains a steadfast advocate for professional excellence and ethical leadership. His fellowships with prestigious institutions including the National Institute of Marketing of Nigeria, the Institute of Direct Marketing, the Institute of Management Consultants, and the Chartered Institute of Directors underscore his contributions to business and governance. His recent recognition as a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Management-Chartered further highlights his influence in shaping corporate and industrial policies.
However, what truly sets Akande apart is his unwavering commitment to justice and fairness. He refuses to stand by in the face of injustice, and his boldness in defending what is right has earned him widespread respect. His deep sense of service extends beyond his professional life into humanitarian causes. A lifelong Rotarian like myself, Akande was honored as a Paul Harris Fellow in 2005, recognizing his dedication to Rotary’s ideals of service above self. His “Officer of Great Ife” award from the National Alumni Association of Obafemi Awolowo University further attests to his contributions to national development.
Proudly a prince of Olla in Osun State, Akande carries his heritage with dignity while embracing modern leadership ideals. A family-oriented man, he upholds values of loyalty, courage, and resilience that continue to inspire those around him. His passion for Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) issues, alternative dispute resolution, and global affairs reflects his broad intellectual and humanitarian interests.
As he turns 60, it is evident that Akande’s journey is far from over. His past achievements lay the foundation for even greater contributions in the years ahead. His story is one of resilience, impact, and service – an inspiration to many and a legacy in the making.
On this special occasion, I join countless others in celebrating a worthy aburo, a steadfast friend, and an exemplary leader. Happy 60th birthday, Olayinka Olalekan Akande. May the years ahead bring even greater fulfillment and success!
