BRITISH-NIGERIAN singer and songwriter Talay Riley has died following a fatal stabbing in East London, prompting a homicide investigation by UK authorities.

Talay, whose real name was Mark Yinka Orabiyi, was reportedly attacked on Friday morning on Pankhurst Avenue in Silvertown. Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the incident but were unable to save the 35-year-old musician.

Detectives from the Specialist Crime Command have since launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

In a statement released by his family, they confirmed the tragic loss and described it as a period of “overwhelming sadness.”

“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Mark ‘Yinka’ Orabiyi, known professionally as Talay Riley,” the family said, remembering him as an accomplished Grammy Award-winning and multi-platinum-selling songwriter and artist whose warmth, humour, and generosity touched many lives.

The family also expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support they have received from friends, fans, and well-wishers since the news emerged.

Talay built a successful career in the music industry over more than a decade.

He secured a publishing deal with Global Publishing at just 18 years old and later signed with Jive/Sony Records after appearing on rapper Chipmunk’s 2009 hit single.

Throughout his career, he earned recognition as both a performer and songwriter, contributing to numerous successful projects within the R&B and pop music scenes.

His brother, renowned music producer Scribz Riley, paid an emotional tribute on Instagram, describing Talay as more than a sibling, calling him a mentor, an inspiration, and a source of light to many people.

Scribz recalled their final conversation, saying they had spoken about future plans and staying optimistic, never imagining it would be the last time they would speak.

He lauded his brother’s kindness, generosity, and lasting impact on everyone who knew him, adding that his legacy would continue through his music, family, friends, and the countless lives he touched.

Several prominent figures in the music industry have also paid tribute, including rapper Stormzy and singer Craig David, both of whom publicly mourned the loss. Craig David had previously collaborated with Talay on his 2018 album, ‘The Time Is Now.’

As investigations continue, tributes from across the music community continue to highlight Talay Riley’s influence as an artist, songwriter, and mentor whose contributions to the industry will not be forgotten.
