Adenike Olarinoye has landed Team Nigeria in the medals table of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games by winning the country’s first gold medal.
Olarinoye struck gold in the women’s 55kg category of the weightlifting event tonight.
She lifted 92kg in the snatch, 111kg in clean and jerk, achieving 203kg in total.
Olarinoye’s total is also a new Commonwealth Games record.
India’s Sorokhaniban lfter claimed silver with a total lift of 202kg, falling short by just 1kg.
England’s Fraer Morrow finished third and won bronze with a 198kg total.
Olarinoye’s victory threw the Team Nigeria camp into jubilation, especially after the other Nigerian lifters failed to make the podium.
