ATHLETES from Kenya and Ethiopia have once again had a clean sweep of the top positions in the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon.
In the 2023 edition held today, a Kenyan won the men’s race and an Ethiopian led the women’s main event.
Edwin Kibet of Kenya claimed the men’s top prize of $50,000, with Guta Hereha emerging as the women’s champion.
Kibet finished first overall in the 41km full marathon in a time of 2 hours, 14 minutes and 6 seconds.
Dekeba Tafa of Ethiopia finished second in 2:14:54 and Kenya’s Bernard Sang was third in 2:17:14.
Hereha was the first woman to breast the tape in a time of 2:40:36, improving from her second place finish last year to claim the top prize of $50,000.
The Lagos City Marathon is in its eighth edition and every main race has either been won by a Kenyan or Ethiopian since inception.
