NIGERIA’S Ese Brume failed to win a medal for the first time in three editions of the World Athletics Championships in the women’s long jump event in Budapest, Hungary last night.

She finished fourth in the event after being in the bronze medal position until the final round of jumps.

Brume, who won bronze in the women’s long jump in Doha in 2019 and silver last year in Oregon, produced a best effort of 6.84 metres, which would have secured her the bronze medal until Romania’s Alina Rotaru-Kottmann came up with a 6.88m jump in her sixth and final attempt to upstage the Nigerian.

Serbia’s Ivana Vuleta took the gold medal with a 7.14m effort, which is the leading jump in the world this year, with Tara Davis-Woodhall of the United States of America claiming silver with 6.91m.

Brume was one of Nigeria’s brightest medal prospects in the Championships and several of her compatriots have already failed to make the finals in their events.

Amaechi Obiageri Pamela, Anumba Ashley and Onyekwere Chioma, who made history by becoming the first Nigerian trio to qualify for the women’s discus throw at the same time, could not reach the final of the event.

Also, in the men’s 100m, Itshekiri Usheoritshe and Seye Ogunlewe did not make it beyond the semi-finals after finishing eighth and sixth in their respective heats.

Meanwhile, Botswana youngster Letsile Tebogo became the first African man to win a 100m medal in World Athletics Championships history by finishing second in last night’s final.

Tebogo, 20, set a new national record of 9.88 seconds to claim silver in a photo finish ahead of Great Britain’s Zharnel Hughes, who clocked the same time, while USA’s Noah Lyles clinched gold in the headline event with a new personal best of 9.83s.
