BB Naija chronicles

By Ubongabasi James

WEEK 1

The reality show kicked off on Sunday, July 19, 2020. Like the previous editions, commentators of different hues argued about the necessity and morality of the show. Of course, there were those who saw the show from a different perspective – as giving exposure and opportunities to talents that otherwise would not have been known or discovered. These did not stop the show and going by the level of participation judging by viewership, those against it may have their say but the show by acclamation has had its way.

Generally, Live Eviction Show, the part of the game most dreaded by house-mates, takes place on Sundays. The Head of House (HoH) game holds on Mondays. The Wager Task comes up every Thursday and the sponsored tasks happen every other day of the week. House parties are reserved for Saturday nights and the host DJ and guest artistes are usually brought in by the show’s sponsors. Housemates are given outfits for every party.

Both the HoH and deputy are immune to eviction in the following week. There is a rule book that spells out the dos and don’ts of the game. Those who fall foul are sanctioned and repeated indulgence could lead to disqualification from the game.

The winner of the Big Brother Naija TV show gets a cash prize of N85million, a car from Innoson Motors, house appliances from Scanfrost, and other prizes from the sponsors of the reality television show.

Nengi, as she prefers to be called, studied Mass Communication at the University of Port Harcourt.

The following is a run-down of what transpired in the BB House from the first week:

Week One

Nengi was the first person to win the Head of House (HoH) game during the opening week of the competition. It was a game of dice rolling and boxes with instructions to determine the first HoH in the Lockdown edition. Neo was the closest contender for the HoH title after a tie but she eventually won the game. She picked Wathoni as her Deputy.

In Big Brother Naija, there are always relationships or ‘ships’ as viewers call it and this season was no different. There were indications that Eric and Neo were smitten with fellow housemates Lilo and Vee. The pair of Eric/Lilo and Neo/Vee had started spending more time with each other in different parts of the house.

Eric felt a bit uncomfortable with Lilo because she had stated from day one that she was in a relationship outside the house.

The housemates also lost their Wager Task in the first week.

For their first Saturday night party, the housemates were given Oppo phones to take pictures of themselves. While the females were all dressed glamorously, most of the males were casually dressed except Eric who had a full on native attire.

WEEK 2

The show entered its second week on Sunday, July 26. There was no eviction in the first week and the housemates had lots of fun. They were all saved till the following Sunday. Lucy emerged this week’s Head of House, taking over from Nengi. She picked Prince as her deputy. According to her, she decided on Prince because he’s someone she can work with and can command the attention of housemates.

The housemates were engaged in an emotional discourse about their life’s journey which brought a lot of them near to tears. Later they engaged in a yoga session which Big Brother asked them to reflect on all the issues affecting them. This drew tears from Praise, Lucy, Prince, and “boss lady” Ka3na.

For ‘ships’ in the house, Eric and Lilo have been getting closer, with Neo and Vee still trying to get to know each other. Erica and Kiddwaya also seem to be getting closer, same with Ozo and Nengi, although Nengi maintains they are just friends. Praise and Ka3na were engaged in acts that sent tongues wagging.

The housemates failed their task for the week and Big Brother punished them for breaking the rules of the task. As a result, the two teams would have to clean the house on alternate days making sure it is spotless.

Saturday night party was sponsored by Guinness with DJ Big N and artiste Oxlade performing. The housemates were dressed colorfully with some painting their faces. Most of the guys wore shorts and blazers.

WEEK 3

The first live eviction show commenced this week on Sunday, August 2, with all the housemates up for eviction except the Head of House and Deputy. As usual, Big Brother (BB) asked the housemates to assemble in the lounge for the start of the show.

Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, host of the BBNaija show welcomed housemates and asked Lucy the Head of House how she felt about winning the coveted position. She felt nobody wanted her to win and that Praise gave her problems. He also asked Prince, the Deputy Head, how he felt and wished him a happy birthday which fell on the day.

The housemates in the bottom four included Lilo, Eric, Praise and Ka3na. Two housemates would be evicted; and other housemates are called into the Dairy Room by BB to vote two out of the bottom four, for eviction. Ka3na and Lilo were evicted from the house. That was the end of their stay in BB House.

Katrina said she was not surprised she got voted out, but would miss Lucy. Lilo, on the other hand was surprised and would miss Eric; but would focus on her business and go for her Master’sdegreeprogramme.

Vee and Wathoni threw caution to the wind over bed space and arrangement. Vee attacked Wathoni for not keeping the bed space arrangement and both engaged in a shouting match.

Ozo also emerged and picked Dorathy as his Deputy. Housemates were determined to win their wager task this week after losing out twice. They spent time practicing for the music drama with Trikytee as director. Ozo was mad at Prince for walking out of the housemates during the wager task practice. He lost his cool for the first time and asked Prince to return and apologise or be kicked out of the session.Prince later apologised. Ozo also apologisedfor losing his cool. It was believed to be an awkward fight between love contenders because the two had an eye on Nengi.

They finally won their first wager task for the season. Their task was about a musical love story set in the 80s. It was directed by Trikytee with Vee as music director. BB also called the attention of Vee and Tolanibaj for speaking in vernacular without translating, thereby violating a house rule.

Kiddwaya remains smitten with Erica even with Nengi hitting on him all week. Eric is now lonely as Lilo, his love interest, got evicted. Laycon not in the best of moods because Erica picked Kiddwaya over him, he was reluctant to express his feelings to her but decided to after BrightO’ advised him. Erica said she’s just attracted to him mentally, not physically as she was to Kiddwaya. Laycon frustrated, goes around complaining to other housemates about his feelings. Neo and Vee are getting stronger while the situation between Ozo, Nengi and Dorathy gets complicated. Dorathy tries to remove herself from the equation by telling Ozo she won’t talk to him.

Kaisha gets her first strike from Big Brother for breaking house rules, by waking up late for early morning exercise and getting locked out of the Arena Room. She’s also fined and it was taken out of her Betway wallet.

This week’s party was sponsored by Johnny Walker with DJ Consequence and guest artiste Ladipo setting the groove. Housemates were dressed to mimic the 80s. They enjoyed themselves. Vee and Erica got drunk in the process. Erica was seen trying to kiss her dancing partners. Vee vomited after the party.

WEEK 4

Eric and Tochi are evicted this week on August 9. Minutes after the eviction show, Lucy and Nengi were engaged in a shouting match. Nengi confronted Lucy and accused her of talking about her to other housemates and a heated argument ensued. Head of House, Ozo, called a meeting and settled issues.

Next day Erica won the Head of House games and picked Kiddwaya as Deputy. During their work-out session, Erica told Tolanibaj how difficult it was not having sex with her deputy, Kiddwaya, the previous night. This was after Kiddwaya told her she would always be in his life, and can’t imagine not caring about her, whether they are in a relationship or not. He assured her that he’s not playing a game and would always have her back.

The remaining 16 housemates won cash prizes between Monday, August 9, and Wednesday, August 12. From the Blue and Black teams winning N2 million and N1 million during the Guinness challenge, to Erica and Praise winning N500K each and Oppo phones in the Oppo charade games.

Erica and Wathoni finally got into a heated argument over Kiddwaya. It started when Wathoni made a comment about Kiddwaya not chasing any girl in the house after Erica said she doesn’t chase guys but guys chase her. It was an indirect sub to Erica and this ticked her off. Erica slammed her for being hostile towards her because of Kiddwaya and Wathoni denied it strongly saying she did not come into the house to get a man; that she has a son to think of and money to make. Erica then told her to behave like she has a son.

Kaisha and Nengi were issued a final warning for violating the rule book which talks about physical violence and behavior. This came after the ladies clashed in the house on Saturday, August 15. BB told Erica, Lucy and Wathoni to control their tempers and address their issues. He also extended the warning to other housemates. It was a week of heated clashes among housemates.

Nengi admits to undergoing liposuction in a conversation with Ozo. She enjoyed her experience and only regrets that she did not blog about it. Situation wasstill complicated as Nengi maintained being just friends with Ozobecause she has a relationship outside the house. Ozo is still very much interested in her and continues to pursue her. Neo and Vee are still together, Kiddwaya and Erica are almost inseparable, Tolanibaj and Prince are joining the ‘ships’, and are beginning to spend time with each other. It seemed that Dorathy and BrightO will join the ships but Dorathy quickly shut it down by saying BrightO only has eyes for Wathoni.

DJ Crowd Kontroller was the spin master for the Saturday night party and Terry the Voice gave a brief performance. The party was sponsored by Orijin. Housemates were given outfits representing their tribes and stacks of cash with their faces printed on them.

WEEK 5

On August 16, Kaisha is the next housemate to leave the house. She was the first to leave as the lonehousemate to be evicted for the week. She told Ebuka she wasn’t surprised being voted out by other housemates because nobody seemed to like her.  She liked Neo. Other housemates in the bottom four: TrikyTee, Wathoni and Neo were saved.

Kiddwaya, who was the previous week’s deputy HoHwon theweek’s Head of House games. He became the fifth HoH. He picked Tolanibaj as deputy because he could not pick Erica, as she was the previous week’s Head. BB gave him a secret mission and hinted he would be going on vacation for a couple of days. Kiddwaya was warned not to tell anyone about this. He should make up a story if anyone noticed.

During Wager briefing, Kiddwaya got into an argument which went back and forth with other housemates. Housemates were confused about the directives of the Wager and Kiddwaya who wasn’t happy with them made a comment that he’s laid back and will still be here next week unlike the rest of them who will be up for eviction. This rubbed off wrongly on most of the housemates and some of them left the meeting angrily. Ozo advised Kiddwaya to apologise which he grudgingly did.

Some of the housemates won cash prizes between Monday, August 17 and Wednesday August 19. Laycon, Nengi, Prince, Wathoni, and Praise, won a total of N2 million in the Hawaii challenge. The five housemates shared the sum, with each member of the team receiving N400,000 each.

Neo sacrificed all his BBNaira for the week as well as a shirt just to secure a bouquet for Vee on her 24th birthday. Kiddwaya remains smitten with Erica and she urged him to learn romance from Neo. Prince and Tolanibaj’s ship seemed to be heading for the rocks fast. She opened up on how she was discovering new things all through the week that points to a shipwreck.

Vee mentioned to Tolanibaj and Erica about being sex-starved and would not know how much longer she couldhold on in the following five weeks; and that it keeps getting harder. BrightO told Kiddwaya about fellow housemate Praise just being with his wife for the money. He claimed Praise told him thatthe wife who he has a child with is close to 60 years. It happened few weeks after they got into the house. BrightO also said that Praise talks to him rudely and would start using spiteful words on him since he now knows his weak point.

Nengi tells Ozo not to take their closeness for a relationship and basically tried to draw a line with that statement and Ozo was visibly disappointed. His love interest ever since the show started was Nengi and he has disclosed this to BB in one of his Diary Sessions.

BrightO and Wathoni were shown on the night of August 21 cuddling under the sheets. The housemates have been spending time with each other lately with the latest involvement being this night.

In a conversation with Laycon and Prince, Praise claimed that HoH Kiddwaya has been sleeping outside the HoH Lounge. He has been spending nights in Erica’s bed. Tolanibaj has also been sleeping in Prince’s bed instead of the HoH Lounge.

Vee and Neo were involved in a petty fight over food after Saturday night house party which was sponsored by Guinness which had DJ Obi for the night.

WEEK 6

One of the bottoms four for the week, Praise lost his tenancy in the house on August 23. Vee, Wathoni and TrikyTee were declared safe.

BB returned from vacation with punishments for the housemates. Erica received two strikes for breaking house rules by whispering and also for misuse of the HoHLounge. Ozo also got a strike for whispering in the house. HoH,Kiddwaya and his deputy, Tolanibaj were banned from the next HoH games for breaking the rules on the Head of house lounge. Kiddwaya got two weeks suspension while Tolanibaj got a week suspension from the games. BB also announced that they lost their Thursday wager and would have to go without hot water in the bathroom for two days, neither were they allowed to boil water.

For the second time since the show started, Ozo won this week’s Head of House. Vee was his closest opponent but didn’t win because of her timing. He picked Nengi as first choice of Deputy, and Dorathy and Vee as second and third choice respectively. Ozo and Nengi are automatically immune from this week’s eviction and also gain entry to the HoH Lounge. They both selected Neo and Vee as their guests for the week.

Ozo and TrickyTee emerged winners of the Pepsi TurnUp music challenge. The two housemates, who belonged to Team Tekno, emerged winners of the highly anticipated task after impressing Biggie with their teamwork, showmanship and accurate lyrics of the song. The winning team performed Tekno’s hit song, ‘Duro,’ released in 2015. They won the sum of N1 million each, an all-expense-paid trip to Dubai for OneFest music festival and a year’s supply of Pepsi beverages. Earlier in the day, the housemates in two per team had been asked to assemble a puzzle piece to determine which of the Pepsi ambassadors they will be representing. Team Tiwa Savage, which had Prince and Nengi, won the task.

All the housemates won various sums of prize money in the Indomie challenge that saw them cooking the noodles with different special spices. The housemates won cash prizes ranging from N220,000 to N430,000 and also won the Kuda challenge.

In a night time conversation with Ozo on August 25, Nengi told him not to take her closeness with fellow housemateKiddwaya seriously. She maintained they were just friends as Kidd was just her play partner and the only person that matches her energy. Kiddwaya is known to have feelings for his love interest, Erica whileOzo has feelings for Nengi.Prince and Tolanibaj decided to just remain friends.

This week’s Thursday Wager task was to create an art piece that portrays what their heroes mean to them and give a tribute. It was an emotion-filled task as the housemates talked about their heroes.

Tolanibaj’s heroes are her sisters who she says have always been there for her even when she was trying to figure out what she wants to do in life and moving back to Nigeria.

Prince whose father is king in his village in Abia State appreciated everything his father has done for him, learning that “a good name is better than riches.”

Vee’s hero was her mother. She doesn’t know what she would do without her as she has always been by her side.

Neo’s hero was his father who he says catered for the family even with 20 children and battling diabetes.

Nengi’s hero was her mother who sacrificed for her, an only child, to go to school despite not being educated herself. She described their relationship as that of friends; and hopes to raise her own family that way.

Ozo’s hero was his father who he says brought him up with the right values and would see it as an achievement if he becomes 70 percent of who his father is.

Dorathy’ said her uncle remains her hero. He stood by her mother and raised her and her siblings when she lost her father.

BrightO’s hero was his mother who was always there for him and he can’t imagine life without her.

Wathoni’s son was her hero. She claimsshe got pregnant as a virgin when her partner’s sperm found its way into her without penetration. Outside her son, music is her partner.

Kiddwaya’s father is his hero. He laid the ground for him to live well for which he remains very grateful. He is never in want of the good things of life.

Erica credits her mother for giving her the best even as a single mom. Even though they’re not so close, she would want to give her mom the best once she makes it in life.

Laycon’s hero was his father, a man he says was a selfless police officer.

Trikytee would have her mother as his hero any day. He tearfully narrated how much she has sacrificed for him and always supporting him.

Lucy’s mother and the second woman she described as another mother who took care of her after her mother died are her heroes. She gives them all the appreciation for making her the woman she is today.

Although the housemates didn’t create individual art pieces for their task, BB let it slide, saying their individual tributes wasunique and their heroes should be proud of each of them. They won their Wager for the week.

This week’s house party was sponsored by Guinness and it was basically a costume party. The housemates were all dressed up as superheroes with some of them looking really good while a few were downright hilarious. The disc jockey for the night was DJ Switch. Star while singer CDQ made an appearance also at the party.

WEEK 7

Erica and fellow housemate Kiddwaya had broken yet another rule in the house and BB would have none of it. He called a surprise meeting and played a series of video clips to the housemates in which Erica and Kiddwaya were seen making signs to the camera. Big Brother then proceeded to read Article 18 on page 14 of the house rulebook that talks about Prohibited Behavior and also stated that rudeness to him was an offense. After slamming the two housemates on their behaviour, he gave a final warning to Erica while Kiddwaya got a strike and would be disqualified if he gets another strike.

This week’s eviction show on August 30 was suspense-filled. Not just one but three housemates were evicted. The eviction was based mainly on viewer’s vote and not a combination of viewers and housemates’ votes. The first housemate to be evicted was Tolanibaj, followed by Wathoni and then, BrightO. BrightO’s eviction surprised the housemates as he was the least person they expected to be evicted. Ebuka announced that voting would go back to normal practice where housemates will nominate themselves for eviction. Viewers will vote to save their favourite nominees from eviction, he added. The housemate with the least votes will be evicted from the show.

For the second time this season, Erica won the coveted HoH title after securing the farthest step count on August 31. The closest housemate to her step count during the HoH game was Laycon. She picked Prince, who had been sulking over game losses, as her deputy. They were asked to pick those who will have visiting rights to the HoH lounge during the week. Erica chose Kiddwaya at first, but Big Brother reminded her that he had been banned from enjoying such privilege. So, her second choice was TrikyTee, while Prince’s choice was Dorathy. Shortly after, housemates were called to the Diary Room to nominate fellow housemates for possible eviction on Sunday. Each housemate was asked to nominate two people. At the end of the process, six housemates were nominated for eviction: Trikytee, Laycon, Lucy, Nengi, Vee and Kiddwaya.

Erica, the current HoH admitted to having sex with Kiddwaya the first time she won the head of house games in the fourth week. She confirmed that the act took place in the HoHLounge when he was her deputy and had the chance to share the lounge with them. That was when she had a conversation with Neo on the night of September 2. She told Neo that she wouldn’t like to watch the video of what took place in the lounge because she did everything. When Neo pushed further asking if she had sex, she nodded and said every single thing.

Erica and her deputy, Prince got into a heated argument with fellow housemate, Lucy. It all started when Lucy complained about being in the same group as Kiddwaya for their sponsored group task. This prompted an exchange between her and Erica which led to Prince’s explosive reaction.

Erica confronted Laycon the previous night over his claim that she had tried to kiss him several times. During the eviction show, Laycon was put on the spot when the show’s host, Ebuka asked him to speak on the claims he made to other housemates that Erica had tried to kiss him more than once. Erica was peevedthat Laycon could go about saying those things about her. After their Saturday night party, she confronted him angrily about it. She called him ugly and skinny, saying she won’t want to kiss someone like him. TrikyTee and Kiddwaya prevailed on her to stop abusing Laycon but she resisted them.

She also clashed with Prince, her deputy, calling him two-faced. She expected him to have her back instead of being diplomatic about the situation. She went as far as pouring water on Prince’s side of the bed in the HoH lounge so he won’t have to sleep near her. She was seen packing her things in the head of HoH Lounge, saying she’s ready for disqualification from the show. She apologised to her housemates later.

WEEK 8

Housemate Erica was disqualified on September 6 from further participation in the show. This was announced few minutes before the eviction show by Big Brother. He quoted an article from the rule book saying she repeatedly broke the rules. He said Erica was being disrespectful to him and fellow housemates. Since it was her third strike, she’s hereby disqualified from the show. She once again apologised to her fellow housemates before leaving the BB house.

Shortly after that, the eviction show went live and Lucy got evicted while Kiddwaya, Vee, TrikyTee, Laycon and Nengi who were up for eviction are safe.

The show has entered the testy stage and housemates are restrategising to continue to remain in the game for the ultimate prize.

TrikyTee finally won the HOH challenge. This week’s game was very competitive as Dorathy, Neo, Ozo, Vee and TrikyTee had a tie. They all reached step 30 of the count.

TrikyTee eventually beat his other contenders to win the coveted HoH title. According to Big Brother, it was not compulsory that he must pick a female deputy since there were only three females left in the show. So, TrikyTee chose Laycon. They were both granted immunity for this week’s eviction.

Housemates up for eviction for the week were Prince, Dorathy, Kiddwaya and Ozo.

Housemates,  Laycon and Vee, were talking about Erica who was recently disqualified from the show. While in the kitchen, after the Head of House games, Laycon told Vee he found Erica’s earrings in the HoH lounge, and Vee who never hid her dislike for Erica did not show any interest in the conversation.

Laycon wanted to know why. Her reply was that Erica doesn’t seem to know how to think for herself and was a weak person. Laycon tried to defend her by saying everyone is weak but Vee would not agree. Vee chided Laycon for always making excuses for her and that may not be ordinary.

“You were jazzed. Now you have been vindicated. You have been vindicated. Yes, I said it. Thank you, Lord,” she exclaimed. She also told Laycon he deserves better than Erica. At some point, she was choked by the onion she was cutting and blamed it on Erica.

Ozo’s love interest, Nengi told him they are not in a relationship and can’t be doing the things couples do, including trying to steal kisses. She emphasised this in a conversation on Tuesday morning during their fitness training exercise. She looked visibly frustrated as she said she doesn’t know how else drive home the point for Ozo to get it. Their ‘ship’ might be heading for the rocks with these statements.

Well, Ozo does not seem to be backing down, even after the admonitions. Just hours after the admonitions he sent three love notes to her.

While getting ready for their task ahead, he passed the love notes written on a paper towel and hidden inside what was written for their wager task.

The first love note says, “I know I love you cause none other has made me feel this way. You are a blessing and a kind person. I can watch you for a life time. You are my favourite movie. Nengi.”

The second read: “With you I want everything. With you I’ll always have a friend & lover. Your smile & laugh gives me joy.”

And the last one: “I’ve met many & none made me love the idea of love like you have. ‘NG Baby’ my love for situationships does not exist cause of you.”

In a conversation with him Thursday night, Nengi expressed her fears to Ozo that they might not be socialising with other housemates because they spend their time mostly together. Ozo replied by saying that it looks that way because there are fewer housemates in the house now. She told him they don’t always have to be together.

Ozo has been issued a second strike by Big Brother for writing love notes to Nengi. Big Brother played the clip showing Ozo passing the notes to Nengi while preparing for their wager task. Big Brother warned other housemates against writing secret notes as it is an infringement of House Rules regarding communication.

Dorathy was seen talking to him after saying she would not forgive him if he gets disqualified. Nengi also advised him to focus on what he came to the house for.

If Ozo gets a third strike, he would be automatically disqualified from the show.

WEEK 9

Prince and Kiddwaya are the latest housemates to be evicted from the house this week while Ozo and Dorathy are safe.

The first housemate to go was Prince and he told Ebuka he expected it and so was not surprised. When Ebuka played the clip on housemates who nominated him, he was surprised that TrikyTee put him up for eviction.

The second housemate to be evicted was Kiddwaya. He wasn’t too fazed about it having told Big Brother earlier in the week that he was grateful to get to this point, and if he leaves, he won’t be sad about it. When asked by Ebuka about Nengi, he said he has no physical attraction for her whatsoever, they are just friends especially as they have similar character traits. He also thought Vee and others nominated him because they felt he didn’t need the prize money.

Housemates still on the tracks are TrikyTee, Laycon, Nengi, Ozo, Neo, Vee and Dorathy.

Nengi has emerged this week’s head of house, the second time since her stay in the Big Brother house.

There will be no deputy this time, according to Big Brother; and nominations will take a different twist this week. The housemates were divided into two groups, three in each group. Each group nominated two housemates. Dorathy, Ozo and Neo were in ‘Team Black’ while Laycon, Vee and TrikyTee made up ‘Team White’. Team Black voted Laycon and TrikyTee while Team White voted Ozo and Dorathy. So, Laycon, TrikyTee, Ozo and Dorathy are up for eviction this week.
