Nature Africa unveils AfricaSTI’s Akin Jimoh as Chief Editor

NATURE Africa, a digital magazine that reports on scientific research and issues of science policy across the African continent has unveiled Mr. Akin Jimoh, founder of Development Communications (DevComs) Network, a media development organisation in science and public health journalism based in Lagos as its inaugural Chief Editor.

He is to work with Mohammed Yahia, the executive editor of Nature Portfolio in the Middle East, which is part of Springer Nature.

Jimoh, a former Bell Fellow in Population and Development Studies at Harvard School of Public Health and former Knight Science Journalism Fellow at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA, has been a consulting editor at Africa Science Technology and Innovation (AfricaSTI) News, an online science publication run and regularly volunteers for the Nigeria Academy of Science in the area of science communication.

The first news editor for the World Federation of Science Journalists’ website and leader in the promotion of science and public health journalism across Africa, played key roles as a mentor and anglophone coordinator in the federation’s Science Journalism Cooperation (SjCOOP) Project.

Jimoh, a medical physiologist and health promotion/education specialist by training, started his journalism career in 1990. He became a health reporter with Nigeria’s leading publication, The Guardian, where he expanded the health section to also cover areas in science and public health.

In the recent past, Jimoh provided professional expertise to the Nigeria Polio Eradication Programme as a communication specialist. In that capacity, he helped to shape the media response to the polio programme at the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
