CAF releases match schedule for Cameroon 2021 Africa Cup of Nations

THE Confederation of African Football has published the match calendar for the next Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

The competition was originally scheduled for 2021 but was postponed to 2022 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to the schedule released on Friday, the tournament will be held from 9 January, 2022 to 6 February, 2022 in five Cameroonian cities.

The opening match will be played on Sunday 9 January at the new Olembe Stadium in Yaoundé from 5pm.

The five host cities are Douala, Yaoundé, Bafoussam, Garoua and Limbe. 

The group matches will be held between 9 January and 20 January in all five venues, with the round of 16 scheduled for 23 January to 26 January.

The quarter-finals will follow on 28 January and 29 January, with the semi-finals billed for 2 February and 3 February.

The third-place playoff and the final are set for 6 February.

A total of 52 matches will be played at the tournament, with 24 teams participating, split into six groups of four.

The top two teams from each group and the best four third-placed teams all qualify for the round of 16.

The draw for the tournament will be held in Yaounde next week, with Nigeria one of the 24 teams to find out their group phase opponents.
