REMO Stars secured their first-ever away win against MFM on Friday as the Nigeria Professional Football League season began in Lagos on Friday night.

Under the floodlights of the Mobolaji Johnson Arena (former Onikan Stadium), the Ogun State-based Remo Stars stunned their hosts 2-0 to set the tone for the new campaign.

Qudus Akanni and Andy Okpe netted the goals that earned Gbenga Ogunbote’s promoted side the three points.

After a goalless first half which the impressive visitors dominated, Akanni opened the scoring 10 minutes after the break.

Okpe sealed the win in the fourth minute of added time as MFM lost an opening home game for the first time.

The opening matchday will continue on Sunday with nine matches scheduled.

The pick of the bunch is champions Akwa United hosting Kano Pillars in Uyo.

Akwa United won their first-ever NPFL title last season and are seeking to stay on top, but they have worthy opponents in the former champions.

Also on Sunday, promoted Shooting Stars of Ibadan are guests of fellow newcomers Gombe United, while Lobi Stars welcome last season’s runners-up Rivers United.

Sunday’s fixtures

Gombe United v Shooting Stars
Akwa United v Kano Pillars
Lobi Stars v Rivers United,
Sunshine Stars v Wikki Tourists
Niger Tornadoes v Plateau United
Kwara United v Dakkada FC
Heartland v Nasarawa United
Katsina United v Rangers
Enyimba v Abia Warriors
