Birmingham 2022: 19-year-old Yusuf wins Team Nigeria’s fourth medal

Team Nigeria took their medals tally to four at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games today as Islamiyat Adebukola Yusuf clinched bronze in weightlifting.

The 19-year-old bagged the bronze medal in the women’s 64kg category by lifting a combined total of 212kg in snatch as well as clean and jerk.

Yusuf successfully lifted 93kg in snatch, and completed 119kg in clean and jerk.

Maude Charron of Canada, 29, won gold in the event with a combined 231kg, which is a new Games record.

Sarah Cochrane of Australia lifted a combined 216kg, just 4kg better than Yusuf, to claim silver.

Yusuf’s medal is Team Nigeria’s fourth overall, and the second bronze.

All of the medals have come from weightlifting, with Adijat Adenike Olarinoye and Rafiat Folashade Lawal winning gold, while 19-year-old Edidiong Umoafia claimed bronze.

Three of the medals so far have been won by women, with Umoafia the only male medallist.
