Ademola Lookman inspires Atalanta to top of Serie A

Ademola Lookman was the star man for Atalanta tonight as they defeated their hosts Monza 2-0 to climb to the top of the Serie A table.

The Super Eagles forward assisted one goal and was awarded the other before it was changed to an own goal as Atalanta earned their fourth win in five games in the Italian top flight.

Rasmus Hojlund broke the deadlock with his first Serie A goal in the 57th minute, although it was initially disallowed for offside before being given following a VAR check.

The 19-year-old passed the ball into an unguarded net after a perfect assist from the left from Lookman.

The Nigeria international also played a big part in Atlanta’s second goal eight minutes later.

Ederson found Lookman at the far post and as Marlon slid to try and block the Nigerian’s shot, the Monza defender ended up inside the net with the ball.

Lookman, who joined Atalanta from RB Leipzig this summer, lasted 88 minutes before he was replaced by Jeremy Boga.

The 24-year-old Super Eagles star has now contributed one goal and one assist in five appearances for Atalanta, who overtook Victor Osimhen’s Napoli to the top of the table.

Two points separate the top three teams in the Serie A standings, with Atalanta having 13 to Napoli and champions AC Milan’s 11.
