Two of Nigeria’s representatives in continental competitions recorded identical comfortable first-leg victories in the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup first round today.

Both teams won 3-0 at home, Rivers United in the Champions League and Kwara United in the Confederation Cup.

Nigeria Football Professional League champions Rivers United outclassed Watanga FC of Liberia in Port-Harcourt with three first-half goals.

They got the scoring off early, Augustine Agu netting in the eighth minute.

Rivers United doubled their lead 10 minutes later through Ebere Duru, and Paul Acquah made it 3-0 in first-half added time.

The Nigerian champions came close to increasing the advantage in the second half without success but they will be optimistic of advancing to the next round.

In the Confederation Cup, Kwara United had to play AS Douanes of Niger Republic at the Mobolaji Johnson Sports Complex in Lagos instead of their home ground in Ilorin, but it did not hold them back.

They also got off to a quick start, opening the scoring through Paul Samson, who slotted home from a rebound off Wasiu Jimoh’s shot.

Jimoh scored the next two goals for Kwara United, converting a penalty in the 17th minute and striking again four minutes before half-time.

Like Rivers United, Kwara United also were unable to add to their lead after the break despite dominating and creating more opportunities.
