Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa has promised to reward the Flamingos for their historic feat at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, which ended in India yesterday.
The Nigerian girls beat Germany 3-2 on penalties in the third-place match in Navi Mumbai to win the country’s first-ever medal in the competition and Africa’s second bronze.
Ghana won Africa’s first bronze in the 2012 edition in Azerbaijan, incidentally after also beating Germany.
Musa was so impressed by the girls’ performance that he immediately made a promise on Twitter yesterday, which he says he will fulfill once they return home.
“N3 million waiting for Flamingos in Abuja. Congratulations,” Musa tweeted in reply to a post announcing the girls’ win yesterday.
Musa has been in a generous mood lately, rewarding the Olympic Eagles with N1 million for their U-23 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying tie victory against Tanzania.
Meanwhile, there was a heartwarming moment at the Fortune Hotel in Navi Mumbai yesterday as the girls from Nigeria and Germany showed the world that rivals do not have to be enemies.
In a video posted on Twitter hours after the game, the girls from both countries are seen dancing to Nigerian music, especially the trending song ‘Cough’ by Kizz Daniel.
In a lovely show of unity in diversity, the Nigerian girls are in German tops, and the German girls in Nigerian wear, apparently after an exchange of jerseys.
There was an overwhelmingly positive response to the video, with most of the commenters praising both sets of girls for the beautiful moment.
The Flamingos are expected to return to Nigeria tomorrow, according to the Nigeria Football Federation.
