Carabao Cup: Aribo dropped as Southampton fall at home to Newcastle

JOE Aribo was not in Southampton’s matchday squad tonight as they lost 1-0 to Newcastle United in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final at St Mary’s Stadium.

The Super Eagles midfielder has been a peripheral figure since Nathan Jones replaced Ralph Hasenhuttl as Saints manager in November.

Aribo has only started two of Jones’ nine matches in charge, coming off the bench in two, and being an unused substitute in four.

The Nigeria international was not even considered for the bench tonight as Joelinton scored the only goal of a tight first leg.

The Brazilian made up for missing a clear chance earlier when he struck 17 minutes from time.

Southampton thought they had equalised shortly after when Adam Armstrong scored, but the goal was disallowed for handball after a VAR review.

The Saints were frustrated further when defender Duje Caleta-Car was sent off with four minutes left for a second yellow card.

Newcastle are now favourites to reach their first major Wembley final since the FA Cup in 1999 as they attempt to end a trophy drought dating back to the 1969 Inter Cities’ Fairs Cup win.

If they make it to the final after next week’s second leg at St James’s Park, Newcastle will face either Nottingham Forest or Manchester United.
