EPL: Onuachu shines as Southampton stun Chelsea, Iwobi’s Everton win, City slip up

PAUL Onuachu posted an impressive performance today, leading the line brilliantly as Southampton shocked Chelsea 1-0 at Stamford Bridge in their Premier League clash.

The Super Eagles striker joined the Saints from Genk in January and is yet to score, but he has put in decent shifts in his three Premier League appearances.

Onuachu lasted for 59 minutes today but in that time he was one of the best players on the pitch, providing a solid outlet for the visitors with his hold-up play and ability to link up with his teammates.

James Ward-Prowse scored the game’s only goal with a superb free-kick to hand the Saints their first Premier League win in four matches.

Onuachu’s Nigerian teammate Joe Aribo was not in the Southampton matchday squad today.

The win moved bottom club Southampton to within three points of the safe zone, while Chelsea are in 10th spot.

In another Premier League clash involving a Super Eagles star today, Alex Iwobi provided the assist for Everton’s only goal in their 1-0 victory at home to Leeds United.

Iwobi’s pass down the right channel was blasted home from an acute angle by Seamus Coleman in the 64th minute to give the Toffees their second win in three games since Sean Dyche replaced Frank Lampard as manager.

Everton rose to 16th in the table, one point clear of the relegation zone, with Leeds United second from bottom.

In the title race, champions Manchester City slipped up after playing a 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest.

Bernardo Silva shot Pep Guardiola’s side into the lead with a spectacular strike four minutes before half-time and they missed several gilt-edged opportunities to stretch the lead.

Forest punished the profligate champions six minutes from time when substitute Chris Wood tapped home from point-blank range after some dodgy defending.

Nigeria forward Emmanuel Dennis was an unused substitute for Forest, while Taiwo Awoniyi is out with injury.

In other Premier League afternoon kick-offs today, Fulham and Bournemouth secured 1-0 wins at Brighton and Wolverhampton Wanderers respectively, while the Crystal Palace pair with Nigerian heritage Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze combined to score for Crystal Palace in their 1-1 draw at Brentford.
