Revelation Cup: Super Falcons edge Costa Rica to end losing streak

THE Super Falcons secured their first win since July in the early hours of today, beating Costa Rica 1-0 in their final Revelation Cup fixture in Leon, Mexico.

Esther Okoronkwo scored the only goal of the clash with a left-footed finish from inside the box in the 42nd minute to ease the pressure on head coach Randy Waldrum.

The nine-time African champions had lost a record seven matches in a row prior to this morning’s encounter, including their first two games in the four-nation Revelation Cup against Mexico and Colombia.

Their last victory was against Cameroon in the quarter-finals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, after which they lost the semi-finals and third-place match to the hosts and Zambia respectively.

The Nigerian ladies went on to lose twice to the United States of America and once to Japan in friendlies, before the Revelation Cup.

The friendly tournament is to prepare the teams for the FIFA Women’s World Cup taking place in Australia and New Zealand in July and August this year.

The Super Falcons are in a tough group with co-hosts Australia, Olympic champions Canada and newcomers Republic of Ireland, all of whom are placed higher than Nigeria in the FIFA rankings.

Canada are sixth in the world, Australia 12th, and Ireland are 23rd.

Nigeria, still the highest-ranked team from Africa, are 45th in the world.
