VICTOR Osimhen could make history on Sunday when he leads out Napoli’s attack in a Serie A battle against AC Milan.

The Nigeria international is having the most prolific season of his young career and is on the verge of leading Napoli to their first Scudetto since Diego Maradona inspired them to the title in 1990.

Osimhen is also close to breaking the long-standing record of Africa’s top-scoring player in the Italian top flight, which is held by George Weah.

The Napoli striker can make African and Serie A history if he scores in the heavyweight clash at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium on Sunday night.

Currently, Osimhen has scored 45 goals in his three seasons in Serie A, 21 of them in just 23 appearances this remarkable campaign.

If he adds another goal, Osimhen would equal Weah’s African record of 46 Serie A goals.

A brace or more for Osimhen would make the 24-year-old Super Eagles striker the outright most prolific African scorer in Italy’s top flight over the former AC Milan superstar, who won the Ballon d’Or and FIFA World Footballer of the Year in 1995 and is currently the President of Liberia.

While it took Weah five seasons, from 1995 to 2000, and 114 games to reach the record 46 goals, Osimhen has netted his 45 from 74 games over three seasons, including the current campaign.

Osimhen scored 10 goals in 24 Serie A games in his first season in Italy following his €80m move from Lille in the summer of 2020.

He improved to 14 goals in 27 Serie A appearances last season before overcoming his injury troubles and exploding this term with 21 goals in 23 matches so far, with 11 matches still left in the campaign.

Napoli are on top of the Serie A standings with 71 points, 19 ahead of second-placed Lazio, with both sides having played 27 matches.

AC Milan are fourth with 48 points, and will face Napoli again over two legs in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League in April.
