EPL: Arsenal ease past Leeds as Palace edge Ndidi’s Leicester, Awoniyi returns

ARSENAL took another big step towards the English Premier League title today with a 4-1 over Leeds United at the Emirates Stadium.

Gabriel Jesus, returning to full fitness after months out due to injury, scored twice for the Gunners, with Ben White and Granit Xhaka adding the other goals.

Brazil forward Jesus opened the scoring from the spot in the 35th minute after earning the penalty as the tight first half ended 1-0.

White made it 2-0 two minutes after the break and Jesus struck again in the 55th minute as Arsenal cruised.

The visitors pulled one back through Rasmus Kristensen with 14 minutes left on the clock but Xhaka ended any hopes of an unlikely comeback with Arsenal’s fourth goal in the 84th minute.

Arsenal are eight points clear of second-placed Manchester City at the top of the standings, having played one more game than the champions.

Leeds United are 14th, two points clear of the relegation places.

At Selhurst Park, Roy Hogson marked his return as Crystal Palace manager with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Leicester City.

Palace went behind to Ricardo Pereira’s thumping finish in the 56th minute and needed some luck to draw level.

Eberechi Eze, the England-born Nigerian midfielder, saw his free-kick crash off the post before bouncing off Leicester City goalkeeper Daniel Iversen into the net for an own goal just three minutes after the opening strike.

Jean-Philippe Mateta completed Palace’s turnaround four minutes into stoppage time, finishing off Jordan Ayew’s assist.

Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi started and played the full game for Leicester City, while his fellow Nigeria international Kelechi Iheanacho was a 72nd minute substitute.

With the result, Palace stay in the 12th spot, two points ahead of Leicester City in 16th, with the Foxes just one point off the drop zone.

In other afternoon kick-offs in the Premier League, Brighton equalised three times to draw 3-3 at home with Brentford, while Wolves scored late to hold hosts Nottingham Forest to a 1-1 draw.

Super Eagles Emmanuel Dennis started for Forest, with Taiwo Awoniyi coming on for the final four minutes in his first appearance since getting injured on January 4.
