ASISAT Oshoala was the star of the show in the early hours of today as the Super Falcons defeated Lions FC 8-1 in a friendly in preparation for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The Barcelona striker scored twice against the local Australian club in the warm-up encounter in Gold Coast.
The other scorers for the nine-time African champions in the one-sided game were Ifeanyi Onumonu, Toni Payne, Rasheedat Ajibade, Halimatu Ayinde, Uchenna Kanu and Gift Monday.
The Super Falcons will kick off their World Cup campaign on Friday against Olympic champions Canada in Melbourne.
Randy Waldrum’s side will then take on co-hosts Australia in Brisbane on July 27 before rounding off the group stages against debutants Republic of Ireland in Brisbane four days later.
The Super Falcons are one of the 32 teams at the biggest-ever edition of the Women’s World Cup, which will be held from July 20 to August 20 in Australia and New Zealand.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s group opponents were all involved in international friendlies yesterday.
Australia edged out France 1-0, while Canada played out a 0-0 draw with European champions England.
Ireland’s friendly against Colombia had to be suspended after only 20 minutes as the match was considered to be too physical, with one of the World Cup newcomers’ players seriously injured.
