FIFAWWC: Nigeria only unbeaten African team as Germany spank Morocco

GERMANY thrashed Morocco 6-0 in Melbourne today to leave Nigeria’s Super Falcons as the only team from Africa to avoid defeat in the opening games of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

The Super Falcons held Canada to a 0-0 draw in their Group B clash on Thursday, while Zambia lost 5-0 to Japan on Saturday and African champions South Africa fell 2-1 to Sweden yesterday.

Today, 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations hosts and runners-up Morocco were at the end of another heavy defeat from one of the world’s established teams.

Two-time world champions (2003 and 2007) Germany were ruthless from early on at the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium, starting the Group H rout from the 11th minute.

Alexandra Popp netted twice for the European giants while Morocco contributed to their own misfortunes with two own goals.

Wolfsburg striker Popp, who has made 120 appearances for her country, got Germany on their way in the 11th minute and completed her brace six minutes before half-time to make it 2-0.

It was 3-0 to Germany one minute after the restart, with Klara Buehl adding to the stunned debutants’ woes.

Morocco defender Hanane Ait El Haj inadvertently put the ball in her own net in the 54th minute to make it 4-0 to Germany, and her partner in defence, Zineb Redouani, followed suit with another own goal 11 minutes from time.

Germany completed the rude awakening for the Atlas Lionesses as substitute Lea Schuller struck in the 90th minute.

Also today at the Women’s World Cup, Italy edged past Argentina 1-0 in their Group G encounter.

Substitute Cristiana Girelli struck in the 87th minute, four minutes after coming on, to give the Azzurri a hard-earned victory at Eden Park in Auckland, New Zealand.
