CHELSEA have confirmed the signing of young forward Deivid Washington from Santos, the Brazilian club made famous by late legend Pele.
The 18-year-old Brazilian joined on a seven-year contract for €20 million: €16m plus €4m in add-ons.
“Chelsea has completed the signing of Deivid Washington from Brazilian side Santos,” the English Premier League announced today.
“The teenage forward has signed a seven-year contract, with the option of a further year, following a breakout season in South America and follows Angelo Gabriel in joining from Santos.
“Washington can play anywhere across the line in the final third but predominately operates as a striker. He sealed his transfer earlier today and the Brazilian becomes our latest summer addition.”
Washington began his career with Gremio, before moving on to Santos in 2016.
After impressive performances for the youth sides, he made his senior debut for Santos in April, coming on as a late substitute in the Copa do Brasil, before netting his first goal a month later in a 3-0 Serie A win over Bahia.
He joins Angelo Gabriel in making the move from Santos to Chelsea, another 18-year-old who has since left on loan to Ligue 1 club Strasbourg.
With Washington’s arrival, Chelsea’s spending during the current transfer window has shot up to around €400m, with Moises Caicedo their biggest buy at a British record £115m.
