Mikel Obi to feature for Chelsea Legends vs Bayern Legends in Vialli tribute

MIKEL Obi has been confirmed to be one of the players who will feature for Chelsea Legends in their friendly match against Bayern Munich Legends on September 9.

The former Super Eagles captain spent over 10 years at Chelsea and was one of the heroes of their first-ever UEFA Champions League triumph in 2012, when they defeated Bayern Munich on penalties in the final.

The club announced today that the former Nigeria midfielder will be joining his colleagues for the game at Stamford Bridge in honour of the late striker Gianluca Vialli, the former Chelsea striker and manager who died in January aged 58.

“John Mikel Obi and Ramires are the latest 2012 Champions League winners confirmed to be taking part in the Chelsea Legends vs Bayern Munich Legends match at Stamford Bridge in September,” the club announced today.

“The duo, integral to our maiden conquest of Europe’s biggest prize, will join fellow 2012 heroes John Terry, Florent Malouda, Salomon Kalou and Michael Essien, as well as manager Roberto Di Matteo, for the game in honour of Gianluca Vialli.

“Mikel was arguably our best player on the night in Munich, and who can forget Ramires’s iconic chip in the Nou Camp that set us on our way to a remarkable semi-final comeback.”

Chelsea also confirmed six other players today for the match, naming Hilario, Frank Sinclair, Pierluigi Casiraghi, Jon Harley, Sam Dalla Bona and Danny Granville.

Other former players confirmed to be taking part include Gianfranco Zola, Claude Makelele, Carlo Cudicini, Eidur Gudjohnsen and Frank Leboeuf.

The club added that all proceeds from the game, which kicks off at 7.15pm, will be split between The Chelsea Foundation and The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, which supports the work of The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, where Vialli was treated.
