TOTTENHAM Hotspur have spoken out against the racist abuse directed at their defender Destiny Udogie on social media after Saturday’s 2-1 Premier League win against Liverpool.

Diogo Jota was sent off for Liverpool after a second yellow card was issued to him for a foul on Udogie, and some of the fans blamed the Tottenham left-back, who was born in Italy to Nigerian parents.

“We are disgusted at the racist messages directed towards Destiny Udogie social media following Saturday’s game against Liverpool,” Tottenham said in a short statement on social media today.

“We will work with the Premier League and, where possible, take action against any individual we are able to identify.

“We stand with you Destiny.”

Udogie, 20, joined Spurs in August last year from Udinese and was loaned back to the Serie A side for last season.

The Italy youth international has started all seven Premier League games under manager Ange Postecoglou this term as they have stayed unbeaten.

Anti-discrimination charity Kick It Out said it was ‘appalled’ to see the youngster targeted.

Udogie was born in Verona, Italy to Nigerian immigrants and has opted to play international football for his country of birth.

He has featured for Italy at U-16, U-17, U-18, U-19, U-20 and U-21 levels but is yet to make his senior debut for the Azzurri.
