ENYIMBA head coach Finidi George is confident that his side will not be weighed down by pressure as they begin the defence of their Nigeria Premier Football League title.

The People’s Elephant will face Gombe United tomorrow in their first match of the new season and Finidi insists he will stick to the philosophy that brought success last term.

Enyimba did not play last weekend as the thrice-postponed 2023/2024 season finally kicked off, and ex-international Finidi says he and his players are poised for action.

“We are coming into the season as defending champions but we won’t allow that to put us under any pressure,” the legendary Super Eagles winger told Enyimba’s official website.

“We have already had discussions with the players and we have made them understand that one thing we must do is stick to our ideologies.

“This is a long season that will have the good moments and the difficult ones, but whatever the case, wet must stick to our ideologies. That is what will give us an identity and give us a chance.

“I understand that the fans have high expectations, but at the same time I am confident that the players we have can deliver. We are all motivated and ready to go at it again.”

On tomorrow’s game against Gombe United, former Ajax and Real Betis star Finidi said: “Gombe United have usually been a difficult opposition, especially when playing against them in Gombe. They have a good crowd of supporters behind them, and that makes them want to give everything. But we will also fancy our chances.

“We just want to maintain a positive approach because that is the same thing that helped us to win many away games last season. I am confident that with the right approach, we will be able to get a good result.”

Gombe United lost their season’s opener last Monday 2-0 to Sporting Lagos in Lagos and will be looking to bounce back at home.

Also tomorrow in the NPFL, Plateau United will host Heartland, Remo Stars will welcome Enugu Rangers, and Sporting Lagos visit Akwa United.

Rivers United, fresh from reaching the group phase of the CAF Confederation Cup, are away to Niger Tornadoes as Lobi and Sunshine clash in a battle of Stars, while Abia Warriors are guests of Kwara United.
