KANO Pillars defeated Rivers United 1-0, the same scoreline with which Gombe United beat Bendel Insurance while Remo Stars defeated Sporting Lagos 2-1 in the South West derby in today’s Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) fixtures.
Veteran NPFL star Rabiu Ali struck in stoppage time to break 2022 champions Rivers United’s resistance at a packed Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano as promoted Pillars earned their second win of the campaign.
At the Pantami Stadium in Gombe, hosts Gombe United needed Ahmed Jimoh’s goal six minutes into the second half to hand Bendel Insurance their first defeat of the season in their third match.
In Ikenne, Remo Stars overcame a sluggish start to beat visiting Sporting Lagos 2-1 to rise to the top of the standings.
Jonathan Alukwu shot Sporting Lagos into the lead in the 18th minute but Remo Stars drew level 10 minutes later through Frank Mawuena.
There was a lengthy delay at half-time due to heavy rains and when the second half eventually started, Remo Stars wasted no time, taking the lead after just three minutes with Sikiru Alimi’s penalty.
There were impressive away draws for traditional giants Enugu Rangers and Shooting Stars Sports Club, also known as 3SC.
Rangers scored first against Kwara United in Ilorin in the 34th minute with Kazeem Ogunleye’s strike before Alao Mohammed rescued a point for the hosts 11 minutes into the second half.
On their part, 3SC continued their impressive start to the campaign with a 0-0 draw in Uyo against Akwa United, the point taking the Oluyole Warriors to fourth spot.
Lobi Stars got the biggest win of the day, beating Abia Warriors 2-0, with first-half goals from Ahmadu Liman and Danbani Alao, while Plateau United defeated Sunshine Stars 1-0 in Jos through Albert Hilary’s 31st minute goal.
