NEWCASTLE United handed Arsenal their first English Premier League defeat of the season tonight, moments after Harry Kane scored a hat-trick for Bayern Munich and set a new German Bundesliga goals record.
Coming off a brilliant 3-0 Carabao Cup win over Manchester United at Old Trafford in midweek, Newcastle produced a performance full of grit and determination to beat Arsenal 1-0 at St James’ Park tonight.
Anthony Gordon scored a controversial goal in the second half to condemn Mikel Arteta’s side to their first league defeat this term in their 11th game.
Former Everton forward Gordon touched the ball home from close range in the 64th minute but it took a lengthy Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review before the goal was finally given.
There were checks to see if the ball was beyond the touchline before Joe Willock crossed it, if there was a foul on Gabriel by Joelinton while he was making the assist, and if Gordon was offside when scoring.
After checking for about four minutes, it was decided that the goal was legitimate and the home crowd could finally breathe and celebrate.
Arsenal threw everything at Newcastle in search of the equaliser but the hosts held firm to see our their fourth consecutive home win.
The result means Arsenal could not go level with leaders Manchester City who they are now three points behind, while Newcastle rose to sixth.
Arsenal, currently in third spot, could slip to fifth place if Liverpool and Aston Villa win tomorrow.
In Germany, England captain Kane confirmed that he has settled in quite well in his new surroundings by scoring his second consecutive Bundesliga hat-trick as Bayern Munich thrashed their rivals Borussia Dortmund 4-0 in Dortmund.
The former Tottenham Hotspur striker, who joined the German champions for a princely £100m in the summer, has now broken the all-time record for the most goals in a player’s first 10 Bundesliga appearances with his 15 strikes.
Across all competitions, the 30-year-old has registered 17 goals and seven assists in his first 13 appearances for Bayern Munich.
