Waldrum, Oshoala, Nnadozie, two other Super Falcons still in contention for CAF Awards

SUPER FALCONS head coach Randy Waldrum and two stars of the team, Asisat Oshoala and Chiamaka Nnadozie, have remained as nominees for the CAF Awards after the nominations were pruned down today.

The Confederation of African Football cut down the number of nominees today, with the Women’s Player of the Year contenders reduced from 30 to 10 and other categories from 10 to five.

Waldrum, whose situation with the Nigeria Football Federation is unclear and has not handled the women’s national team since the 2023 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, is one of the five nominees for Coach of the Year (Women).

He will contend with Mehdi El Qaichouri of SC Casablanca, Reynald Pedros of Morocco, Desiree Ellis of South Africa and Jerry Tshabalala of Mamelodi Sundowns.

Oshoala, who has won the Women’s Player of the Year award a record five times, is up alongside Nnadozie for the big prize, while five Nigerians (Rasheedat Ajibade, Christy Ucheibe, Osinachi Ohale, Toni Payne and Uchenna Kanu) have dropped out.

Among the 10 nominees, there are three each from South Africa and Morocco while Zambia and Cameroon have one each.

Nnadozie, who was brilliant at the FIFA Women’s World Cup and has impressed with Paris FC in the UEFA Women’s Champions League this season, is also up for the Goalkeeper of the Year award, along with rivals from Morocco and South Africa.

Super Falcons World Cup star Deborah Abiodun is among the five nominees for Young Player of the Year (Women), along with her fellow Nigerian Opeyemi Ajakaye.

The Super Falcons of Nigeria, who were the best African team at the FIFA Women’s World Cup in July and August, are among the five nominees for National Team of the Year.

They are up against Morocco, South Africa, Zambia and Senegal.

According to CAF, the winner of each category will be decided after votes from a voting panel consisting of CAF Technical Committee, media professionals from member associations, head coaches and captains of national teams and clubs involved in the group stages of the continental competitions.

The award will be held in Marrakech, Morocco on December 11.
