AS ROMA have confirmed the sacking of Jose Mourinho as their manager in his third season at the club.

The Portuguese coach, fondly called the ‘Special One’ by his admirers, joined Roma at the start of the 2021/2022 season after leaving Tottenham Hotspur and led the Italian club to the inaugural UEFA Europa Conference League trophy.

He also led Roma to the UEFA Europa League final last season but the club have struggled in Serie A throughout his tenure and are currently in ninth spot in the Italian top flight.

“AS Roma can confirm that José Mourinho and his coaching staff will leave the club with immediate effect,” the club said in an official statement today.

“Mourinho was unveiled as the Giallorossi’s 60th coach in May 2021.

“He led the team to win the Conference League in Tirana on May 25th, 2022, and to the Europa League final in Budapest last season.

“We would like to thank José on behalf of all of us at AS Roma for his passion and efforts since his arrival at the club,” said Dan and Ryan Friedkin, the club owners.

“We will always have great memories of his tenure at Roma, but we believe that an immediate change is in the best interests of the club.

“We wish José and his assistants all the best in their future endeavours.”

The club added that further updates on the new coaching staff will soon be provided.

Mourinho won 68 of his 138 games in charge of Roma, losing 40 and drawing 30

Reports in Italy claim that former Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi is among the leading candidates to take over the from Mourinho.

The 2006 Italy World Cup winner was Roberto Mancini’s assistant at Euro 2020 but was sacked by Serie B side SPAL last season after losing eight matches from 17.
