NPFL: Heartland slash players’ salaries in half over poor results

THE management of Heartland of Owerri has cut the salaries of the club’s players as they continue to struggle in the Nigeria Premier Football League.

The Naze Millionaires are currently bottom of the NPFL table and look destined for relegation.

Apparently, the final straw for the management was yesterday’s humiliating 5-1 defeat at home to Plateau United which further cemented Heartland to the bottom.

“The club management has decided to slash the salaries of the players by half as from now henceforth until the team’s performance improves,” Heartland General Manager Promise Ikechukwu told the club’s media team today.

“I was just deeply rooted to one spot after the game yesterday and was the last to leave the stadium because I could not have envisaged the poor performance the players exhibited against Plateau United. They played as if nothing was at stake and as If they were bereft of ideas.

“In all my time at the club, I have never seen a time Heartland FC played so poorly. This is beyond coaching issue and it is time the players took the blame for the defeat and try to redeem their image with a win against Sunshine Stars on Sunday.”

Incidentally, head coach Christian Obi was recalled on the instructions of Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma, plunging the club back into another run of poor form after Obi’s replacement Kennedy Boboye had stabilised them and improved their fortunes.

Heartland currently have only 18 points from 22 NPFL matches this season and are seven points from safety.
