ASIS Chapter Int’l 206 Lagos spearheads initiative to attract young professionals to security sector

In a proactive move aimed at addressing the evolving challenges in the security landscape, ASIS International Chapter 206 Lagos, a local subset of ASIS International has intensified efforts to recruit and empower young professionals in the security practice.
   The chapter which boast of over 700 members, throughout the Southwest of Nigeria, made the move at the NextGen Conference with the theme: “Building a Secure Future: Career Pathways and Innovation for Africa’s Next Generation of Security Professionals” to mark the second edition of the security career mentorship program for emerging security professionals.
   Held in Lagos, the conference brought together industry leaders, seasoned professionals, and aspiring young talents to deliberate on strategies for nurturing a new breed of security experts equipped with cutting-edge skills and modern knowledge.
    The leadership conference also served as a pivotal platform for discourse on strategies to empower and equip young professionals with the requisite skills and knowledge to excel in the security domain.
   While welcoming participants to the conference, the Chapter Chairperson, Mrs. Joko Olanitori, emphasised the importance of laying a solid foundation for identifying interests and acquiring sound knowledge in the security landscape.
   She highlighted the activities of ASIS International and its chapters as reliable allies, offering a wealth of global resources, mentorship opportunities, and certification programs to prepare young professionals for the future.
     ASIS Regional Vice President (RVP), Mr. Angwa Reuben Odum, emphasized the importance of
grooming a new generation of security professionals who are tech-savvy and socially aware.
    He underscored the need for the integration of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and cybersecurity into security practices to effectively address modern security challenges.
    Reiterating the RVP’s sentiments, the Assistant Regional Vice President of ASIS International Region 11A, Mr. Peter Okoloh, emphasized the rising interest of young professionals in diverse security fields beyond traditional physical security. He highlighted cybersecurity, AI, and drone technology as burgeoning areas of interest among the youth, signalling a promising future for the industry.
    The keynote speaker, Mrs. Tanwa Ashiru, who also is ASIS African Regional Lead for Women-In-Security, delivered an inspiring address that resonated deeply with conference participants. With her practical “I can do it” philosophy, Mrs. Ashiru encouraged attendees to grow both their hard and soft skills in striving for greatness in the security sector.
    Her empowering message served as a beacon of motivation, igniting a sense of purpose and determination among those in attendance. Ashiru’s insights highlighted the importance of both intelligence quotient (IQ) and emotional quotient (EQ) as co-factors in sustained success, especially in business and corporate life.
    The conference also showcased presentations by esteemed industry experts, each offering valuable insights into various aspects of security. The CEO of Pahek Security Services Limited, Mr. Charles Keku, elaborated on the significance of copywriting in bolstering security leadership.
    Mr Segun Adeyomoye, Founder and CEO of Techlnk, provided a comprehensive explanation of artificial intelligence’s role in security operations, urging attendees to harness AI tools for enhanced productivity and cybercrime prevention.
    On his part, Mr. Ikemesit Effiong, Partner at SBM Intelligence, delivered an enlightening presentation on “Understanding Africa,” offering future security leaders essential knowledge about the continent’s security dynamics.
    Sharing her firsthand experience as a recipient of the NextGen International Scholarship in 2023, Ms. Kikelomo Shodeko, Treasurer of ASIS International Chapter 206 Lagos, said that by investing in the development of future security leaders, ASIS International Chapter 206 Lagos aims to cultivate a dynamic and resilient industry landscape, poised for continuous advancement and innovation.
    She played a pivotal role as a key organizer of the conference. Her deep involvement in planning and execution perspective underscored the event’s potential impact on empowering young professionals and fostering industry growth. Shodeko highlighted the chapter’s commitment to providing further scholarship opportunities, emphasizing their dedication to nurturing emerging talents.

    A participant, Mr. Mubarak Alonge of APM Terminal, lauded the conference for its enlightening sessions and networking opportunities, citing it as a pivotal platform for broadening industry knowledge and forging valuable connections.
    ASIS Lagos Chapter 206, supported by regional leadership, remains steadfast in its commitment to driving excellence and innovation in industrial security across Nigeria.
