MANCHESTER City trounced Luton Town 5-1 at the Etihad Stadium today to rise to the top of the English Premier League, as Super Eagles of Nigeria midfielder Frank Onyeka netted a rare goal for Brentford in their 2-0 home win over Sheffield United.
Champions City struggled to break down Luton Town in the first half and were only 1-0 up at half-time, courtesy of Daiki Hashioka’s own goal.
Pep Guardiola’s side came alive in the second half, with Belgium winger Jeremy Doku the standout performer, winning the penalty for Erling Haaland’s goal and scoring a fine individual goal of his own.
Mateo Kovacic and Josko Gvardiol scored the two other goals as City went on top of the standings for the first time since November, although fellow title contenders Arsenal and Liverpool have a game in hand each.
At the Gtech Community Stadium, Onyeka came on in the 90th minute and scored his first Premier League goal of the season two minutes later to seal Brentford’s victory over the bottom side.
Onyeka’s well-taken goal from close range cemented a win that took Brentford seven points clear of the drop zone and eased their relegation worries.
At the City Ground, Super Eagles defender Ola Aina was on from the start and played for 89 minutes (he was taken off just before stoppage time started) as Nottingham Forest and Wolves drew 2-2.
Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi is still out with injury, leaving Morgan Gibbs-White and Danilo to take up the goal-scoring responsibilities for Nottingham Forest today, while Matheus Cunha netted both goals for Wolves.
In the other lunchtime kick-off today, Burnley and Brighton played a 1-1 draw at Turf Moor, while Newcastle United thrashed Tottenham Hotspur 4-0 in the early kick-off.
