GOLDEN Eaglets of Nigeria head coach Manu Garba has expressed pride in his players, although they failed to win their opening match of the WAFU B U-17 Championship in Accra, Ghana.

The five-time world champions and holders of the WAFU B title were held to a 0-0 draw by Burkina Faso in their first fixture in the competition yesterday

The Golden Eaglets created several scoring chances, especially late in the game at the Accra University Stadium, but failed to convert any.

However, Garba insisted the boys played a cohesive game in their first-ever international outing and deserve credit for their display.

“We are proud of our team’s performance. Although we didn’t secure the win that we hoped for, our players showed great teamwork and sportsmanship,” Garba said.

“We look forward to our next match and the opportunity to continue growing and improving.

“The boys will get better with experience and exposure.”

The Golden Eaglets face Niger Republic on Sunday night (from 7pm Nigerian time) needing victory to enhance their chances of a place in the semi-finals.
