Ademola Lookman hits historic hat-trick as Atalanta clinch Europa League

SUPER Eagles forward Ademola Lookman was named the man of the match tonight in the UEFA Europa League final in Dublin, Ireland as Atalanta defeated Bayer Leverkusen 3-0.

The Nigeria international scored all three goals to fire Atalanta to their first-ever European trophy and at the same time end Bayer Leverkusen’s remarkable unbeaten run at 51 matches.

Lookman got Atalanta on their way in the 16th minute when he stole in off the left to finish off Davide Zappacosta’s cross from the other wing.

With that goal, Lookman became the third Nigerian player to score in the final of a major UEFA competition, after Alex Iwobi (2019 Europa League) and Joe Aribo (2022 Europa League).

The 26-year-old then doubled Atalanta’s lead in the 26th minute, shifting the ball past Granit Xhaka to smash home and become the first African player to score twice in the final of a major UEFA competition.

Lookman made more history when he completed his sensational hat-trick with another superb strike 15 minutes from time.

He became the first player in the history of the UEFA Cup/Europa League to score a hat-trick in a one-off final of the competition.

Lookman’s compatriots and Super Eagles teammates, Victor Boniface and Nathan Tella, were second half substitutes for Bayer Leverkusen.
